The virus was affecting people staying at Riu Merengue. I know about that. I do not think other Riu hotels were affected. However, that was months ago. It should all be back to normal everywhere by now.

I am making a last minute trip to the DR (decided yesterday and leaving in 5 days).  I am sure that I have had all my shots that are required as a child in the US but am worried about malaria.  Am I too late to take preventative medication?

My husband and I are travelling to punta cana march 2006. Should we take propylaxis drugs for malaria? Also should we get the hepatitis A vaccine?

Pat,

I would suggets the hepatitus A just to be on the safe side .... and Ive been a few times to Dominican Republic and have yet to take any pissl for malaria.
You should call your local health place and find out if the area you are staying in is affected by malaria. Do you also have hepatitis B cuz if not theres a vaccince for both A and B together. Ask your doctor!
But then again its better to be safe than sorry.
Hope everything works out well and have fun
