Caving in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic has the most extensive cave systems in the Antilles and many of these contain artwork done by the indigenous Indians as far back as 3000 years ago. Caves can be explored in the Parque Nacional Los Haitises, Parque Nacional del Este (near Bayahibe), San Cristobal, Moncion, Cabarete, Las Galeras, Boca de Yuma, Loma de Cabrera, Banica and Hato Mayor. Some Tour Operators offer guided caving trips to some of these locations, otherwise you can generally hire a guide who is local and familiar to the particular cave area you wish to explore.
